Q: Chocoholic

Dear Tony,

My name is Lisa R. and I'm a chocoholic. Although I watch my other calories and I exercise, I still need at least two chocolate fixes a day, usually in the form of Hershey bars. Sometimes I binge and go for a half-dozen truffles. I know they are sabotaging my efforts to perfect my physique, but I can't seem to stop. Any suggestions?

Lisa R., Chocoholic

A: Dear Lisa:

I know it doesn't sound fair, but estrogen, the primary female hormone that regulates reproductive cycles, is dependent on fat. Therefore nature dictates that women need fat in order to produce estrogen, so biologically women are programmed to crave foods that increase fat. At various times of the month serotonin levels fall in women and this stimulates food cravings. One of the fastest ways to increase serotonin levels is to ingest fat and simple sugar. What is chocolate? Fat and simple sugar. And that's why you crave chocolate.
